Philip Montague
Science Institute, the first botanical school of the United States at Harvard University, founded the "Station for Experimental Evolution" in 1912, to study the effects of cross-breeding on plants. The Institute's goal was to produce new strains of plants that would be more disease-resistant and productive. One of the Institute's earliest success was the creation of a new strain of roses that was resistant to black spot, a common fungal disease. The roses, which were created by cross-breeding different varieties of roses, were named the "Blooming Jewel" roses. The roses were introduced to the public in 1915, and they quickly became a popular garden plant.
